A brief history of the Food Co-operative

The food co-op has been running for nearly 40 years! Twenty-seven of those from its current premises on the first floor of Union House. It is truly a historical part of student life at Melbourne University, demonstrating a commitment to fostering an ethical and environmentally aware community on campus. Considering the challenges in doing so, it is not surprising that the co-op has faced numerous threats to its survival over the years. The most recent serious threat was one of eviction from its premises in 2000 to accommodate the shift to commercial food outlets in the Union Building. Student support of the co-op was overwhelming: the student referendum held to decide its fate registered the highest voter turnout in Melbourne University history.

Due to the nature of the business, our history is somewhat skint; the who and how it all began seems to be lost into the steam of the boiling chickpeas, so if you have any further details to add, photos to submit or personal history stories we’d love to hear them; send us your tale : yourfoodcoop@gmail.com
